Hypnotherapy
Treatment Conditions

If the mind can create it, hypnotherapy can treat it!

Many conditions can be treated with hypnotherapy and there are many more than those listed below. In fact, there are very few conditions that it cannot help, in some way or other, if only to lessen any worry, anxiety or other malaise that accompanies many serious conditions.

If you cannot see a condition that aptly describes what you are concerned with, please get in touch and I will do all I can to address your concerns. Contact details are at the bottom of the page and to book your Free Consultation, click the button below.

Or to see treatable conditions, continue to scroll down.

A list of some of the conditions that Hypnotherapy can treat

For a brief look at each condition, scroll down the list below the buttons. For a more detailed look at each condition, please select the appropriate button below.

Apart from the conditions mentioned here, hypnotherapy can help many conditions, either directly or indirectly. Directly by bringing about a successful resolution to the problem and indirectly by helping some of the aspects that make the condition challenging. A typical example is a cancer. While hypnotherapy is not suggested as being a cure for cancer, it can help by reducing the anxiety or stress that always accompanies such a condition. The most empowering contribution of this is lowering the stress response which, by default, increases immune function!

Alcohol and Drugs

Conditions like alcohol and drug addictions can be some of the more challenging things to treat and if you are a sufferer, you will be acutely aware of this. The degree to which hypnotherapy can help often depends on the frequency, duration and intensity of the addictive episodes and your own particular predisposition to addictive behaviours.

Nevertheless, hypnotherapy can very often help to relieve some of the comorbid aspects of the condition, e.g. anxiety, fear and varying mood swings, maybe a little, or a lot, of depression. For more information, check. out the full article at the button below! And quite often, it can help bring an end to these life-stealing habits. For more information, click the button below

Anger Management

Anger is perhaps one of the most misunderstood of our emotions. Maybe because anger may not be the underlying problem; merely the observable behaviour of one? It is all too easy for others to see an angry outburst and conclude the person has anger issues. However, anger is often seen in people who are under lots of stress, in an abusive or unsatisfactory relationship, in poor family situations, in an unfulfilling job or experiencing financial difficulties etc. With hypnotherapy, it's quite common to resolve these underlying problems, learn alternative life management skills and see improvements quickly. From there, eventually putting an end to inappropriate and unwanted anger!

Anxiety Management

Anxiety is a word that has no specific meaning until it has an appropriate context. In and of itself, it is a natural phenomenon and perfectly acceptable in the right circumstances. However, it becomes a problem when it occurs out of context. A panic attack, for example, is an extraordinary response to ordinary experience, maybe even no apparent experience; e.g. getting in a lift or being in a confined space for a short period of time. Experiencing nerves before an exam or interview, speaking in public etc. is not unusual, but it should not become the main focus of your attention to the point of debilitating you in your daily life!

Hypnotherapy For Generalised Anxiety

In a sense, a good description of a generalised anxiety disorder is that it is a consequence of overstimulation of many sensory experiences that occurred in the early months and years of life, perhaps even during the gestational period. While we are largely out of sight, other than a bump, during the first 9 months of our development, we are connected to our environment via our mother, for the auditory and physical sensations and to the sounds of the outside world through our auditory senses. That is why a child of a mother with prepartum, as well as postpartum, depression, has a greater predisposition to depression as they grow and develop. Combining this with the many and various negative experiences that most people have as they develop and mature into adulthood, then there is the potential for that perfect storm of too many anxiety-creating stimuli combing to create false (maybe some real ones too), sensory and emotional triggers for anxiety.

As a way of coping with the prospect of erroneous or false sensory signals that trigger an anxiety attack, we develop avoidance strategies, if we don't go there or do that, we won't become anxious. In a macabre sense, avoidance creates a quasi-sense of resolution to a problem but this is false and in many ways not helpful. The person who has a fear of elevators avoids his fear by taking the stairs. And while that may work, you'll likely get fitter too, but you may never discover the opportunities that await you on the higher floors.

Hypnotherapy for Social Anxiety

Social anxiety has some similarities to Generalised Anxiety, albeit with fewer triggers and less general types of sensory stimulus. Nevertheless, in both types of anxiety, being with or in the presence of certain people or just too many of them, the wheels of life begin to buckle under the pressures of too much sensory experience in the presence of other people. This also allows your senses to focus inwards, to highlight your many faults and idiosyncracies, for it is rare if not impossible, for a person with social anxiety to have good self-esteem, self-worth or a sense of self-love.

Like most forms of anxiety, avoidance is a key strategy, albeit it is mostly subconsciously driven by key brain systems. Unfortunately, this subconscious element allows us to consciously process our behaviour and, most often, come up with quasi-reasons or excuses to validate our behaviour. This is akin to the elevator experience I refer to in generalised anxiety (read about that above this section). The good news though, is that all types of anxiety, most often, respond well to therapeutic interventions, especially Hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy For OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), is one of the most complex anxiety disorders. This is partly because it builds a reliance upon certain physical behaviours that are actively performed to relieve the anxiety. Whereas, other forms of anxiety disorders pursue the avoidance of behavioural traits to satisfy the intense feelings of anxiety. The intensity of each person's response to the fight or flight response, which is the outcome of anxiety physiologically, is a very subjective experience. So, each person's experience cannot be quantified in terms of one being worse that the other. However, what makes OCD more complex, is its association with the emotional and motor pathways and the deep subcortical regions of basal ganglia in the brain.

Hypnotherapy For Confidence

When thinking of confidence, I think we sometimes get confused between real (global) confidence and situational confidence. Situational confidence is being confident at work or in your hobby maybe even with people you know etc. Global confidence is being confident, period. That means being confident about what you can do but also confident about what you can't do. For example, you may not like speaking in public at short notice but will happily do it and if you make a hash of it, you can laugh it off, it's no big deal. Confidence is the most basic right of every human being, believe me, I've been there. I've not had confidence and I now do and it's definitely better to have it! However, nowadays, when I think of confidence, I think of it in terms of being confident in the process of living, confidence in me, who I am; Period! I also believe that what we term everyday confidence is a collateral effect of competence. Competence is one of the most confidence-boosting abilities we acquire. The better you get, the more confident you will feel. Hypnotherapy will help you to get better at being yourself!

Help With Depression

Depression is one of the most debilitating conditions that still confounds those who have it and those who treat it because its cause is so varied and unpredictable. The good news though, is that depression responds well to cognitive therapies like hypnotherapy and EFT. Often the underlying cause of depression has its roots in a person's early and formative years. Although, it may not actually surface for many years or suddenly show up following a sudden traumatic experience. It could even be a result of cumulative trauma, small, seemingly, insignificant traumas, e.g. being rebuked or punished, criticized or humiliated over and over. Other things that can cause depression are the loss of a loved one, being retrenched, divorced, isolated or any other type of difficult life-changing experience. Some people are genetically predisposed to depression through parents who suffer(ed) from it too.

One of the most common treatments for depression is medication and many provide excellent help for sufferers of depression but mostly just treat the symptoms; not the cause! However, many studies show that a combined approach of medication and therapy can be the most effective in many cases. Read more - That's mostly because the medication stabilises the patient's symptoms, giving the therapy a head start. That said, many people do not want to take medication and prefer a more holistic approach. In my opinion, nothing can beat hypnotherapy because it gets to the core of the issue and once you deal with that, it is more difficult to plant those destructive thoughts!

Hypnotherapy For Eating Disorders

We live in a day and age where there has never been more information available on the causes of or reason for eating disorders. Despite that, the problem is more prevalent today than ever. One definition of an eating disorder can be, a condition that brings about an unhealthy body style or shape, caused by unknown emotional and mental conflict. For the most part, the condition of being either significantly above or below the norm has nothing to do with food per se. But more often is consequential of difficult life circumstances creating an emotional imbalance that predisposes a person to a particular style of eating habit. Parental (over)control or poor, abusive or weak parenting can often be factors too. It is very important to treat these conditions, to the degree that one can, and the sooner the better, because eating disorders can be, and often are, life-threatening; act now!

Hypnotherapy Emotional Issues

On any given day, sometimes moment by moment, we have an awareness of many feelings. Sometimes they are fleeting, others persisting for hours, if not days or weeks! Often we don't know how or why but there is always a reason? One of the reasons for this ever-changing experience of life is that we are sentient beings. And the senses of Sight, Sound and Touch are largely responsible for that. These three senses are collectively known as V-A-K, (vision, auditory, kinaesthetic). And, when combined with olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste), make up our 5 senses. This quintet equates to the primary reason our brain works the way it does. Essentially it is a sensory processor, that stores these various sensory experiences into memories, then algorithms, that then manifest as behaviours (habits)

In order for these sensory experiences to have meaning, they are organised (often in a disorganised way) into memories (schemas) via intricate networks of neurons. The most important of these, for survival, are emotional memories, as they warn us of the presence of danger, be it real or imagined. This potentially makes life complex because many of these memories are adapted or maladapted (corrupted/distorted) childhood memories. This is why some adults behave like a child when under duress! These memory systems are largely responsible for the difficulties people suffer from. Memory systems are also the cause of almost all emotional, mental or psychological issues! Hypnosis and therapy (hypnotherapy) have a particular advantage when it comes to helping us to readapt or normalise these dysfunctional memory systems. Adulthood often complicates life further because we a logical, rational and cognitive beings at an intellectual level. This is great for how we perform and learn but emotion is quicker and a primordial imperative for survival. So, what you know logically, rationally and cognitively, rarely upends what you know emotionally. Hypnotherapy can change that narrative!

Hypnotherapy For Erasing Memories

It is more often the case that people seek hypnotherapy to remember, be it where you lost something of value or specific details of an event, in fact, Forensic Hypnotherapy aims to assist in that endeavour, be it for victims or witnesses trying to remember something important or crucial.

However, it is becoming frequent that I am asked if I can help a client to erase the memory of someone, usually a partner or lover in a broken relationship. Apart from being a very ineffective way to deal with life issues, this is a very complex thing and one that might result in impairments of what you think or even what you think you want! Mostly this is because we don't have a memory of a lost lover, we have thousands of them. And to go through life erasing the memory of everything we don't want or like, assuming it was even possible, is the stuff of science fiction. Grief is the natural process that allows us to adapt to changing circumstances and within that process, is the development of good life skills.

I have dedicated a page to discuss this in much detail and you can take a look by clicking on the button below

Hypnotherapy For Aviophobia

Do you have a Fear of Flying?

Like all fears & phobias, the fear of flying is a learned condition! And sometimes it has absolutely nothing to do with flying itself. Flying, or even the very thought of it, is often just the sensory trigger that stimulates the fear (fight or flight) response! However, occasionally, the terror one experiences before, during and after a flight, really is a consequence of flying. And with many years of helping clients overcome this irrational fear and many years of experience, as a clinical hypnotherapist, I have developed a unique way to tell the difference! Maybe I can help you too?

The good news, no matter what the cause is, is that the fear or phobia of flying (aviophobia) can be effectively unlearned and Hypnosis is a very powerful and efficient way of achieving that outcome!

Hypnotherapy for Insomnia

Insomnia can be a problem or a symptom of one!

Very often it is a result of what is going on in our lives. This may be a gradual and unnoticed change in behaviour or lifestyle. Or the result of a challenging or traumatic event.

Some of the things that can affect our sleep (which may or appear to be Insomnia) are:

  • Non - 24 hours sleep-wake Syndrome
  • Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome
  • Change in lifestyle (new job, recent events, relationship or family problems etc.)
  • Exposure to a traumatic event or cumulative trauma (series of small negative events)
  • Stress, Anxiety or Depression (it is possible to have all three at once)
  • Conscious or subconscious concerns about our-self or our loved ones
  • Concerns as a result of the daily barrage of negative news at the hands of the world's media!

Whatever the cause, Insomnia is very often highly susceptible to a therapeutic treatment.

However, as a precaution, always consult your GP in the first instance! This is to rule out any underlying physical cause.

Hypnotherapy For ME and CFS

While the conditions of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) often confound the medical community, they usually respond quite positively to hypnotherapy and some other cognitive therapies.

These conditions are apparently one in the same condition and are commonly referred to as ME (UK) or CFS (US). Interestingly, some say they are not the same condition because there is a subtle difference? However, what all observers do seem to agree on, is, that the cause of these conditions is unknown. Furthermore, there is no apparent, medical, cure and they both have a disastrous effect on the life of the sufferer and people close to them.

Very often no organic condition can be detected and effectively you are told that there is nothing wrong with you, but you know different! This is because, we are acutely aware if something is wrong with the way we feel, if only because we have a good knowledge and experience of our own wellness? Having a learned professional telling us there is nothing wrong, can cause many unwarranted concerns for the affected person. I believe that our body talks to us, and we should be concerned enough to seek out advice when we don't like what we hear!

Hypnotherapy For Managing Pain

Pain is a valuable and necessary function of life but not necessarily a welcome one?

All pain comes from signals running to & from the Brain to the affected area and this communication can be interrupted or halted unconsciously, e.g. as a result of shock, battlefield or any serious wound etc. It can also be consciously interrupted by invoking our subconscious processing, (hypnosis)!

Hypnosis has been widely and regularly used to manage pain with great effect, providing, of course, that the pain has no pathological function or that the pain has been diagnosed by a Dr. and is not necessary as part of any circumstance or current condition. Some pains that fall into the category of treatable with hypnosis, are phantom limb pain or pain associated with burn victims, tension headaches and migraines or even pain associated with damaged nerves etc. The brain can actually hold the memory of pain without the initial condition that caused it to be present (phantom). Hypnosis can address those memories!

Hypnotherapy For Panic Attacks

Panic attacks are the sudden awareness of extremely unpleasant, maybe painful, bodily feelings, followed by the secondary awareness of abject fear, maybe even terror; that, "I'm going to die" type feeling! The thing that makes it confusing, is that the time-lapse between stimulus and feeling is in the order of 30 to 40 milliseconds. That's incredibly fast and one of the reasons why you believe your own narrative; i.e. your cognitive, conscious rational explanation of the event and why it is happening! Nevertheless, it is primarily an autonomic response to one or more sensory stimuli, that triggers a cascading effect of neurological actions.

The panic, as in, the bodily feelings is actually caused by the stimulation of the body's defensive mechanisms, (fight or flight) aka the stress response. The fear of a pending heart attack is caused by the stimulation of the sympathoadrenal-medullary system, infusing a significant amount of adrenaline into the heart, causing the heart to work overtime; big time!

If you have panic attacks, until you come for treatment, keep a paper bag handy in your pocket or purse. When you feel it coming on and hyperventilate, start to breathe in and out into the bag, this will rebalance your O2 and CO2 levels. Once you stabilise, why not give me a call at +65 9186 3575 and see if my Hypnotherapy is the right approach for YOU, all you have to lose, is, the panic! -

Past Life Regression Therapy

At some time or other, we've all had feelings of De Ja Vue? When thinking about the unknown cause of any, mysterious, condition, it can be useful to know that it's not actually necessary to believe in past lives for past life therapy to be effective (although it does help). What is, or will be, necessary, however, is the ability or willingness to suspend judgment.

It is highly possible for the mind to believe your condition or problem is from a past life; despite any conscious beliefs. In that context, hypnosis allows us to work with the subconscious perception of the problem and find a solution. And even if you thought the issue was related to a past life, sometimes it's in the 'past' of your current life; everything is possible?

As children, we're often exposed to stories of supernatural activities, ghosts etc. Perhaps, it is here that we develop some beliefs in life before or after death. As adults, we may have forgotten this, but, the subconscious can hold onto childhood beliefs, that no amount of intellectual arguing or common sense can dislodge. It's in this context that rational/logical thinking may not influence the outcome of this type of therapy! For example, if you didn't believe in ghosts, it wouldn't necessarily prevent a fearful reaction if you saw one! Sometimes fear makes us not believe in certain things but reality does not rely on 'belief' to exist?

Of course, it's possible that a previous life experience was true and there's a lot of research that suggests it's a probability! Not everything you believe is true and not everything you don't believe; isn't. But what is true, to your brain; is what you believe!

Hypnotherapy For Phobia And Fear

A phobia is an extreme, perhaps terrifying form of fear. Both its anatomical presence and symptoms can result from merely a thought about the phobic object, e.g. spiders. However, there will always be some form of sensory input, that initiates the thought. In that sense, thoughts are stored algorithmic memories of a previous (or perceptual) experienced sensory phenomena/experience! The sight of a spider's web or even someone mentioning a spider can invoke the most intense emotional response. This, consequentially, can leave its victim almost paralysed and while we talk freely of fight or flight, freezing is actually an initial part of the fear response.

A fear, on the other hand, can be likened to a dislike of something, albeit to varying degrees. Of course, fear can also involve strong emotions but nowhere near those of a phobia. Phobias, like fears, are learned strategies; we are not necessarily born with them but the gestational experience can play a part in unconscious learning in the absence of real-world context (see the full article). Potentially, this is good news because if they can be learned; they can be unlearned. Hypnosis is very powerful in aiding this unlearning process i.e. memory consolidation and LTD (long-term depression)! In a sense reverse hypnosis allowed us to learn it in the first instance so, naturally, hypnosis is an effective method to rid ourselves of this life-limiting problem!

Hypnotherapy for Relationship Issues

Relationships, come in many sizes shapes and varieties these days, yet despite that, the problems that can occur within them seem to be getting bigger and bigger. Just take a look at divorce rates and that doesn't even take into account non-marital relationships. To add to the issue, there are very often dysfunctional parental, sibling and familial relationships, not much change there either! And when it gets to work or social relationships they're no less challenging either. Essentially it seems we often don't have the time or impetus to invest in building solid relationships.

In truth, a really good friend is worth a thousand, maybe a million, Facebook ones. But without a doubt, the relationship that will really turn your life around the most, and often the quickest, is the one with yourself. If we can get that one right, all the others seem to happen so much more easily. They will most likely have a greater sense and depth of affection too! However, there are many factors involved in making, building and keeping good relationships together. And, in that context, nothing is more important than positively developing a warm state of affection towards your own mental health.

That is where hypnotherapy can help because it helps you to define your life, and its priorities, and keeps your mind focused on what you want from your life. So, if those you love, socialise or work with or for are important to the quality and effectiveness of your life, then hypnotherapy will get you on track towards that happy and successful life!

Hypnotherapy To Stop Smoking

Smoking is one of the most prevalent forms of self-harm. People who smoke often say it helps them to relax; yet scientific evidence proves this is impossible! Despite that, people do feel relaxed after smoking, psychologically relaxed I guess?

People say that it is difficult to stop; yet thousands, if not millions, of people, stop every day, especially pregnant women! The reality, however, is that the level of difficulty in stopping smoking resides within your own subconscious beliefs on the matter. Although you may never be consciously aware of this fact. In essence, the only thing you'll ever need to stop smoking is a good enough reason. People who come for therapy to stop smoking for someone else, wife, boyfriend, children etc. are rarely successful Yet the guy who has a heart attack, doesn't even need to come for therapy; a heart attack is a really good reason to stop!

We smoke for very selfish reasons, psychologically akin to a survival issue, and that is why stopping for the benefit of someone else is so often unsuccessful. Hypnosis allows us to address this conscious/subconscious dichotomy and then stop smoking easily and permanently.

Hypnotherapy For Stress Management

Stress is both essential and necessary for an ordinary life, maybe more so for good and effective living. Chronic stress, however, is not.

Stress is defined as the body's response to any load placed upon it. Stress, in its many forms (psychological, oxidative, metabolic, osmotic), plays an important role in marshalling our body's systems and also our defences. Apart from it making us functionally normal, it makes us sharper, quicker, stronger, more resilient and durable; in essence, it helps us thrive and survive. Chronic, or excessive, stress, however, has the opposite effect. Chronic stress could be likened to the first gear of a motor car; it's like driving at high speed in first gear! You may get there but you'll do damage to the engine, tyres, frame etc, you'll use more fuel too and the engine won't make efficient use of the fuel! Hey, but you already know that that's why you use all the gears! So, if it's so obvious that first gear is bad for your car; why isn't it obvious that chronic stress is bad for your life?

For a better understanding of the effects of stress, why not call for a chat, or maybe come in for a free consultation (see below) - or click here: Stress The Full Story

Hypnotherapy For Weight Management

Ironically, being over or underweight may not necessarily have anything to do with food! That is to say that it is not related to feelings of physical hunger (hunger pangs). Very often it is more to do with emotional hunger; or unmet emotional needs. The result of an unfulfilling life or, in some cases, a defence mechanism that keeps you safe?

Hypnosis & EFT are particularly effective with weight issues and once we can address the psychological/emotional aspects of the problem; a solution is highly possible.
