Gaining Confidence

I have a particular personal interest in Stress, anxiety and depression and this led to my studying the conditions for several years before gaining a Certificate in Anxiety Management in 2007. This passion still fuels my desire to learn as much about it roots and prevalence in modern society as I can. I truly believe the world will be a better place if we can deal with these life limiting conditions!

I chose to specialise in the conditions because of the profound effect they have on our ability to lead a normal life. However, I place stress first because I believe it to be the most prevalent in its effect on the human condition. And believe it to be a major contributor to the other conditions above.

Stress is a necessary part of our ability to survive and in our ancestors it played a crucial role in our daily survival. In those early time mankind found itself a menu item on the mind of many predators. In those early days I am sure it was our cunning as well as this instinctive drive that allowed us to outwit those predators and survive to become the true custodians of our planet; albeit that we have also done our part in its current peril!

Stress nowadays takes place in less obvious ways. Long gone are the days when the many faced life or death situations on an almost daily basis. However, the perception of danger is no less potent in its ability to arouse this ancient defence mechanism. Not only is it different, in that it is not obvious that we are in life or death situations, it is more insidious in nature. People face threat in many ways, a 30 year mortgage, declining economies, on a global scale, companies retrenching staff, banks foreclosing on mortgage arrears, massive personal debt,  climatic change almost unprecedented in our time etc. all add up to a perception that life is under constant attack.

Added to that are a growing number of failed marriages, relationship difficulties, job insecurity, pressure to maintain our nations economy and the need to maintain a lifestyle that feeds our ego more than our children! Of course this therapeutic perception is somewhat biased, as we only get to see those who have such difficulty and despite the seeming fact that more people do not present for therapeutic intervention than do; I am sure there are many people out there who live perfectly happy and productive lives?

Stress, or distress to be precise, I feel leads to the rise or increase of anxiety, depression and a loss of confidence and self esteem. In its chronic state, as in experienced on an almost daily basis, it has a progressively damaging effect on our daily lives. It alters brain function, depletes our ability to form new memory or recall current ones. It affects our thinking processes, decision making and executive neural function. This is most evident in making bad or no decision, poor judgement, and irrational mood swings. It impairs our ability to perform as we normally do.

It affects our digestive system, we become prone to all manner or digestive disorders. It also impairs immune function and leads to minor illness, allergies, skin conditions but unchecked it is believed to be a major contributor to serious illness and disease.

It is my belief that increasing our ability to manage stress, gives us the necessary tools to control our life and ultimately, lessen the effect of stress hormones in our body. This control leads to a lessening of unwarranted anxiety and ultimately moves us toward mental and emotional wellbeing. Once we feel more in control we become more confident and our esteem begins to grow.

Working on conditions like anxiety disorders and depression without first considering stress, is like trying to build a house on sand! Many people receive medication in an attempt to control their anxiety or depression and many are very effective in reducing its effect. However, that is of little help if we cannot deal with our response to the stressors that brought about our angst in the first place.

So, I place a high priority in looking for the potential stressors in a client's life. Once we have a better view of the overall situation we can begin to put a plan into being. The stress management plan slowly allows the client to assume ever increasing levels of personal control and thus lowering unnecessary stress levels.
