Effective treatment with Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy and EFT How is Trans4mational Therapy used to help sufferers of Anxiety?
I have made the subject of Anxiety a specialty; and have a Specialist Certificate in the subject. The reason I became a specialist is because I have been a victim of Anxiety myself; and have a desire to bring relief to those who suffer from it. However, the feeling of anxiety is a purely subjective feeling and because of its individual uniqueness one can only ever understand it descriptively!
If you think of it, we love to analyse, rationalise and logicise what is happening to us. Because of this Anxiety often confounds us! We know we are experiencing it; but often have no explanation of its cause or exact nature. The reason is because Anxiety is part of our primitive survival system and is activated by our senses and unconscious mind. However, when the Anxiety is inappropriate, it is responding to faulty or erroneous sensory data. What we feel bodily are the effects of Stress Hormones surging through our body and there are peripheral symptoms that are also consequential to this!
Trans4mational Therapy is a synthesis of Psychotherapy, Hypnotherapy and EFT (emotional freedom techniques). We are, like it or not, Conscious, subconscious and energy beings. And probably we are more intellectually and consciously involved in the se aspects of our lives than at any point in our history; if only because of the intensity and pressure of modern living. We have bad news beamed to us almost second by second. And they are coming up with ever increasing ways of delivering it to us! I believe that the daily influx of bad news; is, bad news for us. Bad news invokes stress hormones and good news doesn't; simple really!
Psychotherapy is a conscious therapy and allows us to cognitively make sense of our issues. However, because much of our issue is subconscious in nature Hypnotherapy addresses this aspect. EFT allows us to address the energy imbalance that almost always accompanies Dis-ease! So, Trans4mational Therapy addresses the triune of how we live life!
WHAT IS ANXIETY? The word 'anxiety' is often used to describe the mental and physical response to any situation we fear; or find threatening. Sometimes, we don’t even know why we find the situation threatening or why we fear certain things the way we do. Our reactions may include trembling, choking, increased heart rate, sweating, feelings of unreality, dizziness, and jelly legs. Anxiety is a normal response – which feels abnormal – experienced, to some extent, by everyone at times. Being bullied at work, sitting for an exam or giving a public talk or presentation are examples of situations in which many people can experience some form of anxiety.
You may be suffering an anxiety disorder if you have any of the following symptoms: 1)Your anxiety reaction occurs frequently 2) Your fears are out of proportion to the situation you encounter 3) You find yourself starting to avoid places or situations where you experience anxiety of any kind 4) It interferes or causes problems with your working, social, personal, or family life 5) Feelings of anxiety occur with no apparent cause or reason Different forms of anxiety include: 1) Panic disorder - Including Panic Attacks and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Agoraphobia 2) Social Anxiety Disorder - Including Shyness and/or blushing 3)Generalised anxiety Disorder 4)Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) 1) Panic disorder: Panic attacks People suffering from 'panic disorder' are likely to experience attacks of sudden and intense anxiety, even though they often cannot associate them with events occurring around them at the time. Generally, you will be free from anxiety in between panic attacks.
PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is a very severe form of anxiety disorder and most often develops after exposure to an extremely severe emotional or psychological event. For example, 9/11 affected many [people around the world, many of whom had no connection to the event. For them the trauma was a result of watching those awful events unfolds on live TV. The event(s) may involve the threat of death to oneself; albeit remotely as a passenger in an airplane, or to someone else. Additionally a threat to one's own or someone else's physical, sexual, or psychological integrity, This type of anxiety leads to overwhelming the individual's ability to cope with life. The psychological effect of PTSD is often less frequent but more intense than the more common forms of extreme stress response. Diagnostic symptoms for PTSD include re-experiencing the original trauma(s) through flashbacks (occurring during our waking hours) or nightmares. This leads to avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma (a key strategy in most progressive forms of anxiety), and increased emotional arousal – which often causes difficulty falling or staying asleep, and. The diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV-TR and ICD-10) require that the symptoms last for more than one month and subsequently cause significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of human functioning.
Agoraphobia: Is a type of anxiety disorder related to fear. With agoraphobia, you fear being in places where it may be difficult or embarrassing to get out quickly or where you may have a panic attack and can't get help. Because of your fears, you avoid places where you think you may have a panic attack or panic-like symptoms.
People with agoraphobia often have a hard time feeling safe in any public place, especially places where crowds gather. Commonly feared places and situations are elevators, sporting events, lines, bridges, public transportation, driving, shopping malls and airplanes. The fears can be so overwhelming that some people are essentially trapped in their own homes — it's the only place they feel truly safe, so they don't venture out into public at all. Common symptoms of panic disorders include the following:
Panic situations are, also, commonly linked with other anxiety disorders. However, those panics are easier to predict because they will usually occur in response to the feared situation(s) or circumstances.
2) Social anxiety The main feature of 'social Anxiety Disorder' is the fear of being the focus of attention or the subject of criticism or negative feedback or comments. People with this disorder may worry that they will do something that may be silly or embarrassing in front of other people. This may lead to the avoidance of these situations and make life difficult for the sufferer. Commonly feared situations include:
speaking or presenting in front of others being the centre of attention asking questions in a group situation eating or drinking in front of others social activities such as lunches, dinners, parties, marriages, sports events, business meetings, festivals etc. taking part in group activities at courses and training sessions
3. Generalised anxiety disorder Generalised anxiety is different in some ways from the other anxiety disorders because the experience of anxiety may not seem to be linked to specific situations or to a fear of having panic attacks. It is an ongoing general anxiety, with tension and excessive worrying about normal events and the future. You may feel worried most of the time about things which might go wrong or you may find that you are tense without knowing what you are worried about. You may also have persistent negative and worrying thoughts about anything or everything. However, you are less likely to have all the feelings that are listed under `panic' and `phobias', such as fear of dying, going crazy or being out of control.
4. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Do you find yourself cleaning excessively or wiping the doorknobs in your home each time someone touches them? Do you go to great lengths to avoid stepping on cracks in the pavement? Or do you feel compelled to wash your hands so often that they've become raw and chapped, or perhaps returning to your home to check and recheck that you’ve locked the front door? Or perhaps indulge in some kind of ritualistic behaviour to alleviate your fear.
Feeling driven to perform such rituals over and over may indicate that you have obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). If you have obsessive-compulsive disorder, ritualistic behaviours may literally take over your life. You have distressing, unwanted thoughts or images that don't make sense to you. These thoughts or images keep coming back despite your efforts to ignore them. You may strive to hide OCD from friends and co-workers for fear of being labelled "crazy."
But obsessive-compulsive disorder, a type of anxiety disorder, is probably more common than you think. And it can affect both adults and children. Because the obsessions and compulsions can be so hard to disregard, OCD can become disabling and chronic. But the good news is that treatment can help bring obsessive-compulsive disorder under control.
What may trigger anxiety? There are many possible triggers for anxiety and it often starts during periods of psychological or physical stress.
Examples of psychological and physical stress include:
HOW IS ANXIETY TREATED WITH HYPNOTHERAPY/PSYCHOTHERAPY & EFT? Feeling anxious does not necessarily mean you have a problem. Anxiety is a normal response that everyone has to certain situations. But anxiety is not always useful; sometimes it reaches disabling proportions.
The aim is not to get rid of all anxiety as a certain amount is necessary for motivation through normal living, but rather to reduce it to manageable proportions; or control it.
One of the best ways to manage anxiety is through psychological help such as Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy or EFT; and with social support. Exercise and meditation can also help and in fact you cannot be anxious and relaxed at the same time! With these therapeutic methods it is possible to: control and stop panic attacks reduce stress and anxiety change any negative and unrealistic thinking and reduce worry get back to normal living quickly and prevent the symptoms from recurring in the future
Because some Anxiety symptoms are similar to organic disorder, e.g. heart palpitations, it is wise to have these checked by a Medical Professional; and put your mind to rest and lessen the Anxiety caused by these thoughts.
