| Why are my sessions longer than most other Therapists?
When I first started as a Therapist, over 11 years ago, I followed the therapeutic Norm, i.e. 1 hour, however, that hour was in fact only 50 minutes long and here in Singapore for some Therapists it is only a total of 45 minutes!
Initially I use to plan for each Client but what I began to notice was that sometimes things had changed since the last session and this meant that it was often not appropriate to use what I had planned to do. And it is my belief that if a Therapist uses what is best for them, then the Therapy is not about what is best for the Client. I also noticed that sometimes Clients are hesitant to bring certain things up and as the session went on their natural resistance mellowed; often only minutes from what would be the last part of the session.
As a Therapist I did not want to delve into something unless there was sufficient time for the Client to successfully conclude any emotions that came up. Sometimes the emotions that came up were so strong that it would have been unethical to have just ended the session because the 50 minutes were up.
So, that is how I developed the longer session and one of the things that tends to surprise most Clients is how quickly the time passes.
I guess being a little unconventional helps too as I never got a satisfactory answer as to why Therapy is only one hour to begin with! I could imagine Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung discussing the matter and coming up with several options and for all I know the decision was made on the flip of a coin?
I rarely have a complaint from a Client about the length of the session and the Client always has the right to say... I can only do 1 hour today... and I will always work to the Clients agenda... not mine! So, for you this means added value as my charges for the 2 hour session are in line with most other therapy charges for an hour! Effectively meaning that it is half the cost! However, there is no compromise on the quality of my therapy. So that just means you get double the value!
