Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, what are they?
Some say it is something we experience every day, which is not exactly true, at least in the context of how it is said! Hypnosis is, however, similar to something we experience daily, which is trance states but these everyday trance states are usually quite light, mostly transient in nature and completely involuntary. These everyday states, that are perceived as hypnotic, are somewhat akin to sleep states and occur naturally but are not the same as the hypnotic state! During sleep, neurological processes, that occur naturally, facilitate memory consolidation and reconsolidation and it is during these processes, that longer-term memories and learning take place.
Therapeutically speaking, hypnosis is mostly voluntary, one can stay in it for an indefinite period, e.g. as determined by the type of therapy and/or the therapist and it can, under the guidance of a skilful hypnotist, reach depths that are almost not possible during normal everyday trance states. Essentially, therapeutic hypnosis occurs when we are in these deeper sleep-like states (as in nighttime sleep, theta brainwaves), where we experience REM (rapid eye movement) and NonRem activity. NonREM occurs in phases 1. (twilight) 2. (dream states) and 3. (delta wave). NonREM 3 is slow-wave sleep and often called deep sleep. Because of time and space, this is a very brief description of this fascinating subject and one that may differ greatly from that of others in this field? Nevertheless, it is an opinion, based upon thousands of hours of research into the mechanisms of the brain and almost 20 years of clinical experience!
The most empowering effects of hypnosis most often occur in these deeper states of brainwave activity (via the mind, a hypothetical construct that makes the brain easier to understand). During hypnosis, the hypnotist guides the client into deeper states of trance, from where, they can effectively communicate with the brain, primarily via conscious and then nonconscious auditory processes (what some refer to as the inner or subconscious mind) and therein, change at a neurological level takes place.

That said, it is possible for some changes to happen during states of consciousness as well as in our everyday light and transient trance states, a lot of the habits and behaviours we have actually developed this way, although in reverse so to speak. So it would be fair to say that some trance work/hypnosis is a consequence of being de-hypnotised! One could reasonably describe these experiences as light trance states. When it comes to helping clients resolve more serious conditions, perhaps ones that have developed over many years, often as a consequence of things like trauma, cumulative trauma or neurological illness or malaise, or even mental/emotional illness, hypnotherapy is particularly efficient.
In order to make life more tenable, the brain can develop dysfunctional coping strategies and/or defence mechanisms. These can evolve into what are termed hidden agendas, which are stored deep within implicit memory systems, systems that work outside of conscious awareness and therefore, do not require our conscious consent; i.e. they are automatic! Hypnosis helps us discover ways to recapture life and change these strategies.
The strategies that evolve into life issues or problems are mostly made outside of our conscious awareness and their intention is usually to help us cope better with life or keep us safe (fear strategies). Albeit they can often make life feel like a very scary place, e.g. during a panic attack! In the treatment of these types of issues, I believe deeper trance work often yields better, quicker and more permanent results. This is because the necessary change required is made at a deeper neuronal level, while the brain is in the same stages of brainwave activity where these conditions often first manifest into long term behavioural habits. All change, at the level of behaviour, emotion and feeling, is a consequence of a change in brain function. This deeper level of the brain's activity is also the place where memory is consolidated and reconsolidated and every neurological reaction is a consequence of stimulus-response mechanisms, aka memories. Everything you do that is deemed a habit or behavioural trait occurs through this process. So, it makes perfect sense that being in this same neural sleeplike state is where you can reverse maladapted mental states, change unwanted behaviours or develop new more functional ways to live. While I say "sleeplike state" it is worth pointing out that hypnosis is similar to sleep but not exactly the same, it is the brainwave states that are similar.
When explaining what hypnosis is, some say you will hear every word and this is also not true. The question then becomes, if you heard every word; were you in hypnosis? After all, you do not even hear every word in a normal conversation, so why would it be any different in hypnosis? They would argue, that this is because hypnosis creates a heightened sense of awareness! Well, many thousands of my clients, over nearly 20 years as a clinical hypnotherapist, have made profound changes in their life through hypnosis and they would argue against the above comment of "heightened awareness," mostly because they say they had very little awareness but still it worked? And even if there was heightened awareness, it is most likely that it would be a subconscious awareness and, therefore, outside of consciousness!
I believe it is the creation of clear channels of communication, via the mind, at deeper levels that allow us to communicate directly (at a cellular level) within the brain and that is what creates the profound change. What we call "subconscious mind, is merely the transmission lines (akin to telephone cables) that convey the signals that we know as a language (via neurotransmission). To add to the above, I have had hundreds, maybe thousands of clients over the years, who have said that they recalled very little of what was said, yet, despite that, a profound change occurred! The reason this change occurs is because of another type of brainwave, PGO waves (ponto-geniculo-occipital waves). PGO waves are quite simply an explanation, a window into the neural mechanisms that show us how the brain works, naturally! PGO waves, which precede REM sleep, occur when we are in sleep states, the same place where we go in hypnosis. PGO waves occur throughout and across many of the key areas of the brain and are actually instrumental in learning and memory consolidation/reconsolidation.
